40TH (GRIZZLY) INFANTRY DIVISION
(CALIFORNIA NATIONAL GUARD)

The 40th Infantry Division was headquartered in Los Angeles prior to the start of the Korean War. It was federalized on 1 September 1950 and sent to Camp Cooke, CA, for training. Upon completion of training in the United States, it deployed to Japan in April 1951 for advanced training, then further deployed to Korea on 3 February 1952 where it replaced the 24th Infantry Division, who returned to Japan and became Far East Command General Reserve. The division returned to California and was released from active duty, 30 June 1954.
