Thanks for posting the information. You should remember though that the
information at Archives is the data base that Department of the Army
[Defense]sent
over about 1980. Since then they've updated their records. Since 1954 there
have been over 500 reclassifications from DWMIA/POW to KIA/DOW. Also a number
of corrections, deletions, elimination of duplicate data. I have a roster
that was released in 1994 with the updated information and casualty numbers
so know whereof I speak.

Recently the 50th Ann. of the KW Comm. Committee released a bookmark showing
these updated numbers. Make all inquiries to that committee at 1213 Jefferson
Davis Highway, Crystal Gateway Four, Suite 702, Arlington, VA 22202 - not to
me. This is also where the DoD's directorate for information operations and
reports is located - DIOR.

Here are the current numbers as stated by DoD DIOR - Hostile deaths: 33,651;
Non-Battle: 20,617 (this includes 3,262 non-battle deaths in Korea [2,452
Army, 173 Navy, 339 MCm 298 AF] and 17,355 "other" deaths which occurred in
places other than Korea, eg: US, Germany, etc. and for which there is no data
base). Total - 54,268. As we speak the roster is once again in the process of
revision. The DoD says that no roster of the "other" deaths exists at DoD;
this is probably true, but there is some evidence to suggest that records do
exist at archives but that it would cost about $1 million to build such a
list.

Included - repeat INCLUDED -in the hostile deaths for Korea are so-called
8,200 + BNR (body-not-returned or remains not returned cases in hostile
categories KIA, MIA and POW). The numbers can be found in the DPMO's data
base seePERSONNEL MISSING -
KOREA [PMKOR]. The numbers keep changing as new information is found and
the DPMO updates frequently.

In addition to the DoD DIOR data base, the American Battle Monuments
Commission is also building a data base for the Honr Roll data base that is
available at the kiosk at the Korean War Veterans Memorial at D.C. It is not
on the internet, but in my estimation should be. However, the ABMC will sell
you its roster for a hefty fee. Their roster contains all of the DoD DIOR
information, plus it has the post-war Korea (DMZ etc) deaths; merchant marine
and civilian deaths in Korea; a number (last I heard about 100) of the
so-called "other" worldwide deaths included in the 17,355 figure. Plus a
small number of entries which are in addition to or differ from the DoD DIOR
data base.

A number of K-vets across the country are working on the "other" deaths and
have been able in recent months to give ABMC additional names. Wish more
K-vets would do the same thing. They are finding names of deaths at sea, in
training accidents, in maneuvers in Germany, in airplane crashes, etc. from
all over the world - these deaths did not occur in Korea, but they are part
of the 54,268.
