For those not familiar with the "Battle of Unsan," on 26 October 1950,
the 1st and 6th ROK divisions were routed by Chinese Communist Forces (CCF
--who had just entered the war on the North Korean side.) This happened a
few miles north of the town Unsan in far northern North Korea. On 28
October 1950 the U.S. 1st Cavalry Division was ordered to Unsan to fill the
breech and the 8th Cavalry Regiment was the Division's lead element. The
8th Cavalry Regiment arrived at Unsan on 31 October and set up a half-moon
shaped defense perimeter with Unsan as the center. The perimeter stretched
over 6 miles of terrain, too much for a single regiment to man with a solid
defense so units were placed along likely approach routes, thus leaving
large gaps between battalions and companies. The following day, 1 November
1950, the Chinese began making daylight probing attacks. That night they
attacked in force.
