I don't know if this applies. But being in aviation ordnance 40 years ago, 
the 20 mm shells came colored to identify what kind of ammo was being used. 
Black was for regular ball ammunition, Red with a gold impact fuse on top was 
high explosive, incendiary, I think Blue was for armor piercing and I can't 
recall what color tracers were. And we belted the ammo in various 
combinations depending on what the mission was.
