Re: SUBMARINE OR PHANTOM TARGET? A Search For The Truth

Allison and Donald,

A great piece of research. While I can't anything to the puzzle. I believe
that I have several declassified quarterly (?) U.S. Navy reports from the
Korean War which might touch on the subject. I also seem to remember seeing
a declassified ONI recognition handbook for the Soviet Navy from the same
period which details all their ships (including submarines). Unfortunately,
I don't have all my files with me at the moment (we're in the process of
moving). If you contact me in a month, or so, hopefully I'll have all these
files and can lend them to you.

Have you,

- contacted the office of Naval History at the Washington Naval Yard. They
might be able to provide you with additional information. If you can visit
them they have a complete collection of ONI REVIEW for the period. ONI
REVIEW was the official SECRET magazine of Naval Intelligence. It has an
incredible wealth of information on a wide range of intelligence related
issues from the period. Somewhere there might be reference to this subject.
If you get there to check out the ONI REVIEW I'd check from the date of the
incident out to the last date available. Many things didn't show up in ONI
REVIEW until years later.
- Checked out the books written by Norman Friedman? He has written
extensively on the development of U.S. (and Soviet ?) submarine forces. He
might have touched on the subject.

How about placing all your research together on the subject in a short
report in .pdf format for the list? You could also include scans of all the
declassified documents you received. I'd be more then willing to assist you
technically, as well as in producing maps (a hobby of mine).

Best of luck with your research.

Regards,
Joe
