I started 6th grade in 1950 & we boys were quite enthralled with the MiGs 
vs F-86s reports in the papers & news magazines.  It was common at the time 
to hear that Russians were flying the MiGs fighting our side via the 
grapevine.  I think it even appeared in print that Russians were 
"suspected" of flying in combat.

Was this generally suspected at the time?  How wide-spread were the rumors?
