The Russians indicate that they went to great lengths to avoid getting
caught, but most of the in crowd (i.e. SIGINT voice interceptors) and some
others knew as well what was up. One pilot (Yevgeniy Stel'makh) reportedly
earned his HSU medal by shooting himself to avoid capture when he came down
too close to UN lines and was afraid of being caught. That's also why the
Soviet units didn't fly outside of what they called "The Sausage" (MiG Alley)
as they didn't want bodies or live pilots picked up at sea or across UN lines.
