Re: SUBMARINE OR PHANTOM TARGET? A Search For The Truth
Al:
I have your e-mail and your letter regarding the submarine activities.
Comments/Observations: When I was on the R-1-676 boat from Sep, 51' -
Dec, 51 and on the R-1-667 Dec, 51 - Nov, 52 and on the U-1197 Nov, 52 - Jun,
53, I do not nor do I know of any of our troops that have any knowledge of
sub activity. However, There were boats up there from sometime in 1950, and
in 1951 prior to my arrival (re, Alan Bishop).
What would be helpful would be some Latitude/Longitude coordinates for marine
chart review these subs were sighted/engaged. Perhaps the Japanese sunken
wrecks that were subjected to ASW have the same coordinates or operated in
the same sea lane courses.
Further I only know of the following ships in our operational are (re, Chodo)
from my experience:
Royal Dutch Navy: Eversten, HMS Belfast, HMCS Athabaskan, USS destroyer
(unk), USS Pelican, Minesweeper, HMS (unk) aircraft carrier.
The only ship that really stayed around any length of time was the HMS
Belfast, cruiser, the Commodore was the local area C.O.. She is moored in the
Themes River in London as a Naval Museum. Her logs may help.
For Ed Evanhoe: The only officer's names I can recall from the 6004th Air
Intelligence Special Services during my time were; Nichols and a Captain
Thomas. There was a Major with whom I had constant confrontation (unk).
