Re: CIA Discloses Korean Spy Records
Marty:
There were two main minorities: Manchus and "white" Russians (refugees from
the USSR). The latter were taken away in 1945 when the Soviet troops
occupied North Korea.
We used to pick on the poor Russians (they were called - mah-ho-jaeng -
big-nosed devils) and the Manchus (Chinese). They were treated badly under
the Japanese during WWII. We were taught anti-Chinese songs like -
Chinamen, let's kill them all (sih-na-jin-no jjiang-ko-lo, mina mina
ko-ro-se!).
After WWII ended, anti-Chinese sentiments were damped down with the return
of the Korean vets of Mao's Eighth Route Army, who were pro-Chinese and went
after anyone mistreating any Chinese or Manchus.
Yes, Koreans are racists - probably more so than the folks in Deep South. I
saw in South Korea many Korean mama-sans turning away Afro-American
soldiers.
Racism played some roles in the Korean War and I hope that some historians
will study this subject in depth and put things in proper perspectives.

ysk - weren't you living in North Korea in the 1950s? Question: how many
minorities were there in North Korea in the 1950s and if there were any, how
were they regarded?
