Re: CIA Discloses Korean Spy Records

Joe!

I've talked with Joe Goulden several times; a real gentleman and very
helpful to me. Joe had the integrity to tell me in advance not to trust some
of the info about Tofte in his book "Korea: The Untold Story of the War."
Even though he had access to the Tofte family records, it turned out that
virtually the only source on Tofte . . . was Tofte himself.

As I described in Devil's Shadow (Oh Christ, another plug!), Tofte's
fortunes with the Agency faded rapidly after he embarrassed his bosses in
D.C. This he did by sending back "combat" film footage of an "actual raid"
conducted by Agency partisans behind enemy lines. The Agency brought in a
lot of Washington bigwigs to look at what it's "man in Korea" was doing, and
everybody loved the glitzy film. Right up to the point where some spoilsport
asked "do they really run partisan raids in broad daylight?" Yup. Brother
Tofte had simply filmed a training session, then peddled it as the real
thing. Tofte was canned by the Agency a few years later, in bitter
circumstances.
