Re: Race Relations and Korea
To whom it may concern;
I was the Mate on a United States Air Force 85 foot crash boat # R-1-676.
We were based (?) on the island of Chodo, five miles from the Chinnampo
River mouth. On September 8, 1951, we were called to rescue a downed USAF
pilot from the river. During the action we were bracketed by NK artillery.
During the fight, Jim Johnson, a black man, our Cook, Gunner, and Deckhand
was wounded along side of me by shell fragments. He received the Purple Heart
for his wounding. Several of us were also recommended for decorations ranging
from the Silver Star to The Bronze Star. None were ever awarded because the
USAF has told us that it should have been reported within two years after the
action.
This is FYI.
