Re: Race Relations and Korea

Shelby L. Stanton in "Ten Corps in Korea 1950" had this on pg. 319, "Marine
Major General Smith personally integrated the 1st Marine Division by
distributing a thousand black Marines throughout his command, rather than
keep them in a separate service outfit, an act that incensed Almond. The
Corps itself contained mostly black service units, including both its medical
ambulance companies, engineer dump truck companies, and ordnance ammunition
companies, as well as its signal construction company, salvage company,
bakery company, petroleum support company, and laundry company. Of the six
corps truck transport companies, four were black." Marty
