Re: Race Relations and Korea

<>

Joe, I believe you may have misconstrued the subject matter in the "Race
Relation" posts. These posts are not about the prejudice between people.
What they are about is the time when an official government policy of racial
discrimination came to an end.
I do not believe the subject matter was ever meant to be a "racial issue
B/S, " i.e., pitting one race against another. The subject matter of the
post is not about "prejudice," per se, what the post are about is -- at what
time in history did the U.S. Armed Forces mature enough to integrate their
military services? Although it was in 1948 that Truman had ordered the armed
forces to integrate, by the time of the beginning of the Korean War not all
the units in the armed forces were fully integrated. It just so happened that
the Korean War was the catalyst that helped accomplish the full integration
of the services, especially in the navy and Maine Corps.
The controversy and exchange of posts began when a member implied that
all the U.S. Armed forces were fully integrated throughout the Korean War.
Other members, especially navy and Marine vets, challenged this belief
because of their own personal experiences. A few members with an interest in
the issue exchanged posts in an effort to set the record straight or at least
put their "two-cents" in on the subject.
As far as canceling the URL remember the Korean War Vets' URL is like
Sunday's newspaper, it has a great diversity of interest. Some members are
interested in the history of the war, some the air war, some the clandestine
aspects of the war, some poetry, some MIA/POWs, some the generals, etc., and
like Sunday's newspaper you don't cancel it because it has sections that you
are not interested in.
I have a great respect for all our members' opinions while at the same
time I believe that no member should endeavor to limit the subject matter (as
long as it relates to the Korean War), space and time that others have to say
on subjects of interest to them. All posts are identified by the sender's
address and subject before they are opened. If the subject isn't of interest,
or if a member feels the subject is a lot-of "B/S," all he has to do is to go
to his keyboard and push the delete key and go on to the next post. Have a
nice day. DON
