Recent Korean War Articles
Here are two recent articles concerning the Korean War,
1) Burke, Rear Admiral Arleigh. "Burke Speaks Out on Korea," PROCEEDINGS,
May 2000, pp. 68-72.
This is a reprint of a October 1950 report written by then Rear Admiral
Arleigh Burke evaluating lessons learned from the first several months of
the war. Although he appears to be pro-Navy, Admiral Burke clearly,
succinctly, and honestly describes some very important lessons. I especially
appreciated his evaluation of the KPA.
2) Aid, Matthew. "US Humint and Comint in the Korean WAR: From the Approach
of War to the Chinese Intervention," INTELLIGENCE AND NATIONAL SECURITY,
Winter 1999, pp. 17-63.
This is an ABSOLUTE MUST for everyone interested in the Korean War to read.
I became aquatinted with Matt and his research a number of years ago, was
able to assist him in a VERY SMALL way, and was impressed with his work.
In short, THERE WAS a Korean War era counterpart to ULTRA/MAJIC and in this
paper Matt has begun to slowly and tediously unravel it. A tremendous amount
of work in this area certainly remains to be done, however, Matt's paper is
SEMINAL and lays the groundwork for future researchers to build upon.
Stop whatever your doing, run (don't walk) and go get a copy of this article
(the rest of the issue is also extremely interesting).

Joe
