Re: Looking For Information Edward O'Neil

Hello Shirley,
I served in Korea from September 1950 to December 1951. I spent many hard
hours & days at the front lines & forward air strips. I am ever thankful
to my Lord for bringing me home safely. I have a very sick feeling in my
heart for all the GIs who didn't make it home. I lost several buddies
there & I also made some good buddies in other outfits that I came in
contact with. One such buddy was in the 7th Infantry. We remained good
buddies after we got home; visiting each other from time to time; up
until my good buddy passed away in 1980.
I was surprised to learn that he left my one of his most prized
possessions; a book called the Bayonet. This book is a hard bound
"History Of The 7th Infantry In Korea; September 1950 to October 1952. I
have cherished this book for the past 20 years; I have never even given
though to parting with it; but then I have never come across a Son who
had never seen his Dad because the War had taken his Dad too soon.
Because this book is an official publication of the Public Information
Office of the 7th Inf. Div. for the 7th Inf Div Historical Council;
published 1 January 1953; it would probably contain so very much
information for you & your Brother. It is filled with pictures &
commentary. It features all the Commanders; maps & pictures of many
hundreds of GIs. It's entirely possible that you might find a rare
picture of your Father in these pages.
If not; at the very least; you & your Brother would have a very indept
factual record of where your Father was & what he did & why.
I must tell you; I am not giving this book away; my buddy who left it to
me; ask that if I ever pass it on to another; do it not for profit. I am
asking just enough for the Bayonet Book to allow me to purchase a head
stone for my buddy. His family is too poor to afford one & even though it
will be a sad day for me; I am sure my buddy will approve of the two
reasons I am offering you the book; to get him a head stone & allow you &
your Brother to get to know your Father better.
If you & your Brother would like to make me an offer that would allow me
to buy my buddy a head stone; please do. If not; please know that I will
be praying for you & your Brother in your quest to find out more about
your Father. God Bless
Richard
