Re: [the-forgotten-war] Stars and Stripes
That was Marguerite Higgins, a New York Herald Tribune reporter, who
was in competition for a Pulitzer with the other Tribune reporter in
Korea, Homer Bigart. She was reportedly pushy, and somehow managed to
wangle a ride up to the landing strip the 1st Marine Division had
built to accommodate transports which brought in replacement, ammo,
etc., and carried out the wounded. When General Shepherd, who was up
there then visiting the 1st MarDiv commander, O.P. Smith, learned
that she was there and wanted to march out to Hungnam with the
division, Shepherd hit the ceiling and ordered her placed on the next
plane out, and she was. BMF
