searchlights-flares

I was on a hill attacked at night (April 23-1951).

I understand the Chinese used flares to light the battle zone- there 
were many there that night.

And bugle calls.

But earlier I noted a searchlight unit of US Army.

They were trying to bounce the light off some clouds to illuminate the scene.

I don't think this worked very well-

Anyone have expereince with searchlights?
