It certainly was not staged. You can call the photographer who took the
picture -- Carl Mydans, at Time Life -- and ask him. Expect an earful. He
becomes quite angry at the thought.
MacArthur just didn't stage the landing. That is one of the hundreds of
myths about him. Those interested in learning more are encouraged to read
any of the three standard biographies of the man, those by Manchester,
Clayton James (especially, in this case, volume II) or Perret.
