Mydans wasn't "set up on shore":  there is a rather famous picture of
several photographers clustered around MacArthur immediately before he
landed, and Mydans is the one to MacArthur's immediate right.  Mydans and
several other photographers rode a separate landing craft in, beached
immediately ahead and to the starboard of MacArthur's landing site, and ran
over to document MacArthur and Osmena wading ashore.  They were on site a
matter of seconds ahead of MacArthur.

Mydans, of course, was using a Rolleiflex Automat camera, so prep time
wasn't necessary.
