Re: Recent Korean War book releases
To All,
* There have been two recent book releases that Korean War
list recipients might enjoy, as follows:
1] WAR IN KOREA, 1950-1953, by D.M. Giangreco
(Presidio Press, August 2000, 330 pages, Illustrated (521 b&w), $50.00)
Members might recognize Giangreco as editor of "Military Review:,
Command and Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, KS publication.
Book is very similar, though larger in format, to the 1951 released
"Pictorial History of the Korean War" (VFW Memorial Edition).
Some of the photography is the same but no reference is given to this
work
by the author. Most references are the US Army and Marine Corps official
histories, plus
volumes by Appleman and Hallion. Very little USN/USMC or USAF
photography.
Interestingly, he spells "Chosin" as Choisin in his bibliography ref to
Appleman's
East Chosin, Entrapment and Breakout work.
2] THE DRAGON STRIKES, CHINA AND THE KOREAN WAR, JUNE-DECEMBER 1950,
by Patrick C. Roe.
(Presidio Press, June 2000; 466 pages. Illustrated. Maps. $ 34.95 )
Just released history that takes advantage of recent Chinese writings
on the subject.
Author was a Marine Lt., serving with 3d Bn, 7th Marines during the
Korean War.
PRESIDIO PRESS can be reached at (415) 898-1081 x 19 or via
www.presidiopress.com
3] List members might also want to consult Eric Hammel's CHOSIN
(Vanguard Press, 1981)
because of the unit participation list in the appendix.
This includes the 41st Royal Marine Commando and various units attached
to
X Army Corps, incl 92nd Field Arty Bn (Armored), 52nd Transportation
Truck Bn,
7th Inf Division and battalion units of 31st Infantry Regiment. This, in
view of recent
discussion by list members over non-Marine participation in the Choson
Res. area.
