Korea July 1952
I'm looking for information about coastal action in the Hangnam area around
July 1952.
A ship I am writing about, the USS CURRIER DE-700, was involved in a dual
with some shore batteries around Hangnam in early July 1952. A particularly
memorable exchange took place on July 4th. In interviewing a couple of crew
members there seems to be a difference of opinion as to whether the batteries
were on the mainland or a small harbor island either at Hangnam or somewhat
south of there.
During the same period, the CURRIER rescued the pilot of an AD4 who went down
while attacking targets in the area. They seem to remember that the pilot was
from the carrier Boxer.
I have checked a half dozen books on the Korean War and find very little
reference to action on Korea's eastern shore in mid 1952 and absolutely no
mention of Hangnam or carrier activity during that time frame. The fellows
are not wrong on their dates because I have access to official USN records
that put the USS CURRIER and the Boxer, along with several other ships, in
the Wonson/Hangnam area in July 1952.
While the small action that took place may not have made it into the history
books, it was a big deal to the crewmen on the CURRIER and a very big deal to
the Navy pilot who went into the sea. Perhaps someone on this list can help
me understand what was going on in that area at that time? I'm looking for
either a brief summary or a suggestion on what reference book(s) might shed
some light on my question?
Thanks to all for your help.
