October 8
By evening, the 7th and 8th Cavalry Regiments had secured the I Corps
assembly area in the Kaesong area. Both units had patrols on the north
side of the 38th Parallel by noon. In the 7th Cavalry sector, one patrol
from the regiment's I&R platoon found the 800-foot combination
highway-railroad bridge over the Yesong River was still standing, although
damaged to the point where it could only support foot traffic and plans
were made for an attack across the river via the bridge. The attack to
take place the following day.
In the central sector, the 6th ROK Division finally drove North Korean
defenders from Hwach'on and entered the town. Meanwhile the ROK 7th
Division crossed the 38th Parallel and moved toward the "Iron Triangle."
