Re: Fwd: research
I think that Mr Ryan needs to get the book on the KMAG (forgot the name,
but the Army published it and it should be in the WP Library).
I think he needs to get away from the military aspects/reasons/memoirs.
The 21st Infantry Regiment, no matter how poorly equipped, trained, led,
manned and so on did not cause the War. Neither did any other American
Army unit. (The Navy/Marines on the other hand.... <grin>)
The Korean War has it's roots dating back to the Japanes starting to
influence Korea, (killing the Crown Prince, and the eventual taking
over/occupation of the country). Despite current Korean Propaganda, a
lot of Koreans welcomed the Japanese coming in. There were Japanese
collaborators during the entire occupation. There was a "resistance
movement" but "splintered" among various factions that could not agree or
get along. When the US arrived in Korea, there were at least 21
different political factions (14 with their own armed band) in the US
Zone. There is no telling how many different factions were in the Soviet
Zone (the Soviets being experts in bringing people together... just ask
the Czechs and Poles).
The War is the result of the different disagreements on how Korea should
be run after the occupation and it also had to do with Soviet-US
Political goals in the Far East after WWII. Some may even say the roots
of the Korean War date back to the Japanese-Russo War (which T Roosevelt
won the Nobel Peace Prize for ending the war). I think getting back to
Czarist Far East Expansion or the carving up of China (while it does
affect Korea and what will eventually happen) is a bit much.
