It is not hard to cross the military demarcation line (MDL) in the DMZ as it
is completely open.  On the south side most of the mines are south of the
South Barrier Fence and on the north side they are along the fencelines that
are some 100's of meters north of the MDL.  In 1987 while I was stationed at
Camp Greaves a KATUSA with one of the DMZ patrols defected by just walking
across the MDL.  I think that the US SPC (White I think his name was) did
pretty much the same thing in the early 80's.
