Re: First appearance MiG-15s

The war changed dramatically at 1345 hours [1 November] when six swept-wing
MiG-15s scatterered another 'Mosquito' air control aircraft and a flight of
F-51s.  The USAF claimed no losses from the enemy air action.  Belov's
[first commander of the 64th Fighter Air Corps, the parent unit of the
Soviet MiG-15 divisions that fought in Korea] 151st, and elements of the
28th, Fighter Air Division entered the war from airfields at Anshan and
Shenyang.  According to the hand-written combat log kept by Belov's Chief of
Staff, Colonel Merzelikin, "field post [polevaia pochta] 13793" flew 16
sorties between 1250 and 1605 hours and claimed two F-80s shot down with no
MiG-15s lost.  Each regiment of the 151st flew two patrols of four-plan
flights [zveno] beginning at 1315 hours with an intercept and destroy
mission [perekhvat i unichtozheniye] mission, led by Major Stroikov (N.V.)
of the 72d Fighter Air Regiment [polevaia pochta 42135], over Andong.note 2

p. 115, note 2 TsAMO-A; fond 151gv.iad, opis 152688ss, delo 7, listi
1(ob)-2.  The 72d and 28th Fighter Air Regiments are identified as polenaia
pochta 42135 and 06843 respectivelyon list 18 of this document.  The log
also identifies the 28th Fighter Air Division as polenaia pochta 62529 and a
subunit (perhaps the 139th Fighter Air Regiment) as polenaia pochta 29625.

[roughly translated], "On 1 November there was one battle when pilots of the
1st Squadron of the 72d Guards Fighter Air Regiment in the area Sinuiju:
under the command of Kapitan I. A. Gutsa. encountered four F-51s and
attacked them."

"Red Devils" is not footnoted, but I have little doubt that the authors, one
of whom--A.A. German-- is a former MiG-15 pilot, had access to the same
archives that I did.

If you'd like any more info, please let me know.  A warning however that
once started this Irishman has real problems stopping!
