Mark, as usual, is dead on the money. 

One of the big things on claims which I have noted is that any Sabre trailing 
black smoke was counted as killed by the Soviets, as when MiGs did that they 
were on fire. But that was normal for the GE engine at full power, so the 
Soviets were fooled when the Sabre pilots ran for it. 

Likewise, when the MiG was hit by a Sabre, the trail of grey smoke only 
indicated one or more combustion chambers were damaged, and the Mig more 
often then not made it home, even though the US pilot counted it as a kill 
for the reverse of the same reason (Sabre trailing grey smoke equals dead 
duck.)
