Re: Korean American Spies

Hi, Col. Haas:

I have several sources but the following three are in the open:

1) Scalapino and Lee "Communism in Korea" (p 449) Only one paragraph
mentioning her name

2) Peter Hyon "Making of Korean Americans" (I have not read this book
myself and am relying an abstract made by a friend) Peter's account of his
sister's activity in NK differs substantially from that in (3). Peter claims
Alice left for NK without telling anyone and that it was probably in 1950
when she left. Records show that she left in April 1949 and was arrested in
April 1950 in Moscow.

I believe David Hyon, Peter's son, lives in LA. Alice's father was a Korean
Christian minister active in Korean independence movement in America and
Shanghai. I believe David has been trying to get Seoul gov to recognize his
kin's patriotism and sacrifice.

3) http://banmin.or.kr/n_chungsan60/ji/lsy.htm (in Korean) I believe the
author of this article is/was with ANSP.

I hope you will look into this case and get the facts. I suspect Ed Evans
knows quite a bit about this case and you may want start water-torturing
him.

Another case I am researching is the strange case of the Kwak couple. They
went to NK in 1955 or so and no one knows what happened to them. The
circumstance of their departure from the US is quite murky.

Tues

YSK!

I hope this finds you in good health and spirits! You seem quite
busy
with this project. As you know from our previous discussions I am quite
interested in your reports, and these I have never heard before. If you do
not need your sources confidential, would you please tell us where you are
getting this information from?

       Thanks!

Mike
