Abe,

Also, Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships (DANFS),
about nine volumes, as a starter. Much of the rest comes
from ship movement files, various reference books by
other authors, and ships logs (copies) requested either
via National Archives or Navy historical center, Wash. Navy Yard.

You can buy DANFS volumes via USGPO, but not sure
all are still in print. Albphabetical for ships names, ie
A-B in one , R-S in another,  etc.  Some libraries have too,
but usually under non-checkout collections. 

Web site will give you price info, etc. and ref to
telecon or web ordering instructions.
