Familiar and use www.history.navy.mil/ 

but finding "organizational" units, such as 
Destroyer and Cruiser Squadron/Divisional
assignments post-war is more difficult.  Hometown
or ships unit histories usually are more beneficial -
as ship association and reunion groups these days
sometimes put up sites.
