replacement system

Can anyone describe "a day in the life" of a replacement?  What was the
first step in the process once he debarked in Korea?  How long could he
expect to wait before being assigned to a unit?  Did he have much
freedom of movement between arriving in Korea and assignment to/joining
a unit?  In other words, was he likely to have the opportunity to
explore the city?  Any help will be greatly appreciated.
