Sounds to me reminiscent of the trick Hitler pulled going into Poland. Seems
to me he too claimed he was only defending himself. Rule # 1 - Do something
wrong and somehow blame your actions on your opponent.

Very interesting story!
Could it be that N.Korea was aware of the S.Korean attack at the time
and prepared to counterattack?
