Re: The Korean War in Cinema
No -
Jang means "long" and jin means "gulley". It was named after Jangjin River,
which was dammed by the Japanese to create Jangjin Reservoir.
"chosen" is the Japanese word for "chosun" (aka Yi Dynasty), where 'cho'
means 'morning' and "sun" means "calm" - hence, "the Land of Morning Calm".
Historically speaking, there was a kingtom called 'go-chosun' that occupied
much of today's Korea and Manchuria - before Christ.
"Korea" - used to be spelled 'Corea' in the US and elsewhere until the
Japanese changed it to Korea (why? that's another story) - refers to Koryo
that preceded Chosen.
BTW, NK goes by 'chosen'.

Wondering. Did the Japanese choice to name the reservoir Chosin have any
connection with the fact that there was at one time in Korea a Choson
Dynasty? Marty
