ARMY SEEKS MAN'S FAMILY
Timothy R. Gaffney Dayton Daily News
The U.S. Army is looking for family members whose genetic code might help
identify a Dayton serviceman lost more than half a century
ago in the Korean War.
William Philip Anderson was among more than 8,100 American servicemen who
were unaccounted for when the fighting stopped in
1953, said Therese Fisher of the American History Co., an Army contractor in
Fredericksburg, Va.
Anderson, listed as killed in action in 1950, also is one of thousands
for whom the military has no contact with surviving family
members to help identify his remains, Fisher said. A joint U.S.- Korean
recovery effort has returned more than 100 sets of remains,
but only a handful have been identified.
Finding families is even tougher for soldiers such as Anderson who had
common names, she said.
Fisher said Anderson was an Army tank driver who was listed as missing in
action on Nov. 25, 1950. She said the Army later concluded
he had been killed in the battle of the Chosin Reservoir.
Anderson was born in Dayton on Nov. 21, 1931 or 1932 - "We think he lied
about his age," Fisher said - and apparently lived here until
he joined the Army.
Fisher said records show he was the son of Chester D. Anderson and the
former Myrtle M. Wentland. She said he also had a younger
brother, Robert Russell, who was adopted into a different family. She asked
anyone with information about Anderson's family ties to contact
her office at (800) 813-1049.
