...The sculpture will be part of a Korean War monument to be dedicated at
the school (West Perry High School) next May (2002)

"It's long overdue. It's no longer the forgotten war", said Hank Ford,
quartermaster of the Perry County (PA) Council of VFWs.

Members of the Korean War Veterans of Lycoming County (PA), Inc. drove
almost two hours to attend the ceremony. Bill Kast, 72, the group's
commander, said the group recently dedicated its own memorial in Veterans
Park in Williamsport (PA).

Students have been raising money to pay for the monument which is expected
to cost about $5,000. Donations have come from civic and veterans groups
and individuals.

History teacher Jeff Popchock received two contributions during yesterday's
ceremony. "I don't know of any schools that have a permanent World War I or
World War II and Korean War Memorials", Popchock said. The names of the 13
Perry Countians who died in the Korean War will be on the monument, possibly
carved into the stone foundation. Final design work is underway. Dean
Metz, 67 of Middlesex Twp., a Korean War veteran, has contributed to the
project and has also kept a close eye on its progress. Metz's twin brother,
Gene, was killed in January, 1952 in the Korean War.
Metz has a strong conneciton to the monument, which depicts a Marine
lying on an overhang, peering through binoculars on outpost duty.
Metz's company commander used binoculars to watch the North Koreans -
"It just rang a bell as soon as I saw it," he said.
Contributions toward the project may be sent to West Perry High School,
2608 Shermans Valley Rd, Elliottsburg, PA 17024
