Since MM came up I would like to know something about this Shell casing

bottom 75 mm BH 1984 18

The shell has been hand hammered by a Major Fritz Eberhard
A. German prisoner of War in WW1. This shell was hammered with designs and
the top carved into petals. I have heard the prisoners made these for
cigarette money
My wife's great uncle was the owner and His name is on the shell

What was the main use of this size shell? Have two of these things, looks
like hammered by different prisoners.
