The diesel was mixed with naptha from what I understand to make it easier to
start the engines. A pure diesel engine wouldn't burn so fast in the summer
as the Soviets dropped the naptha from the mixture then.
It's the same reason all those T-80B tanks blew up in Chechnya on New Year's
Eve 1994-95, as the fuel (diesel -- which runs turbines reasonably well) was
loaded with the stuff.
