I remember as a child there was a product that you could buy in just about
any store called Naphtha. It was used as a cleaning agent for clothing.
Rather than sending your clothes to a cleaner, many people would rinse them
out at home. It was reusable and a thin liquid. I seem to remember that it
also smelled not too bad, if you were interested in a "high" back in the 30's.
The correct spelling is Naphtha, but was spelled as Naphta I think on the
cans of cleaning fluid
