There is a decent article on the history of napalm at

The article states that the incendiary bombs used in the Dresden raid in 
'45 were napalm & it was also used in the fire bomb raids on Japan.  I had 
always thought these used classic magnesium incendiaries & the photos 
representing B-29 fire bomb raids on Japan showed clusters of small, 
elongated bombs, not what I would expect napalm bombs to be.
