Re: WANNABE HUNTERS

Tony:

I've been seeing the theme a lot lately.  I notice it on a military history list that censors my posts through Michigan State.  I had several queries there, one involving naval burials, and he didn't post them.  Another involved executions for desertion which should hit closer to home with "the Big Bugout" of what was it 1950? when the Chinese intervened in Korea after the fall of 1950?  That's what the South Koreans called it, and they were shooting officers for cowardice or desertion before retreating Americans' eyes while we just watched...

Anyway, I originally read the post thinking of Thoreau's idea of how we should all be hunters, etc., from his "Spiritual Laws" or something essays from a book I got when I visited Walden Pond last November.  Moreover, what about ideas like the president of American World War Two Orphans Network (AWON) that I could claim to be my grandfather for record-keeping purposes?  He was KIA in World War II...

I had to laugh at your comments about a "jamoke" going to Wrigley field though, and that's why I respond...  It reminds me of this guy who was into all sorts of crimes telling me I should claim to be a professional athlete or telling me about his claiming to be one and getting the girls, etc.  I believe he eventually got convicted of statutory rape (of a 14 year old)...  Moreover, he was black and probably 6 or more years younger than me, missing a tooth, and claimed he got it poking they eye out of a white guy who was among a group of people beating him up or something...  However, he did also claim his brother died in Vietnam, and I'm trying to start a company to help families of US KIA and am looking for some letters the Pentagon sent me claiming it was "enthusiastic" about the idea.  We could probably promote Presidential Memorial Certificates more. as far as screening goes, but other groups help you with them already, don't they?  Has Bush continued the program?  I guess I'll discuss them as well at a VFW dinner I got invited to in Morgan Hill...

grandson, John Wallace Rich, US Army, KIA 1944, former engineering student and ROTC at Purdue, married to a woman whose mother became a Ph.D. in the 40s or 50s, Dr. Beatrice Gelber, my great grandmother.  My grandmother got her Master's degree only because of sex discrimination...
first cousin, once removed, Louis Enrique Bartning, US Army, KIA 1951

P.S. What about there being an explanation rather than a psychology behind some of these supposed claims?  For example, my family, and others' families, sometimes call first cousins, once removed "uncles," and actually Louis Bartning was the firstborn and only male with two younger sisters.  I was the only one allowed to visit with great aunts down in Mexico where his father retired, etc.  I think it upset at least one younger sibling though...

P.P.S. My dad says he does not like seeing that "Senior, 11th Year" signature, so I don't know if I should use it...  I have been complaining a lot though, and the U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights thought I had a valid complaint on a basis that has been very new to me resulting at least partially from something that makes me wonder if you're being realistic with your claims...

I THINK A LOT OF IT IS THE ORGANIZATIONAL AND INDIVIDUAL AWARENESS OF
SERVICE, MAINLY FROM THE VIETNAM ERA - UNLIKE PREVIOUS WARS, AN UNUSUALLY
HIGH NUMBER OF PEOPLE DIDN'T SERVE, MANY BY DEFERMENTS, MANY BY GOING
NORTH......THEN, WITH THE PUBLICITY AND HYPE OF SUCH THINGS AS SEALS, SPECIAL
FORCES, SOG, ETC, ETC, THESE "WANNABEES" NOW FEEL LEFT OUT. (feelings of
inadequecy??)  DURING WW II, AND EVEN KOREA, THERE WAS NOT QUITE AS MUCH
MOVING AROUND, AND EVEN AS A HIGH-SCHOOLER IN THE 50'S I KNEW EVERY ONE IN MY
HOME TOWN (HELL, in the COUNTY!) THAT WAS A REAL WW II OR KOREAN WAR
VET............BASICALLY, THERE WERE ONLY 3 KINDS - THE VETS,  THE 4-FS AND
THOSE THAT WERE EXEMPT) AND EVERYONE IN TOWN KNEW WHO WAS WHO. THE VETS
PRETTY MUCH CAME HOME AND STAYED THERE.   I HAVE RELATIVES IN BIG CITIES
LIKE CHICAGO - THEY KNEW EVERYONE IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD THAT WAS A VET OR WHO
WASN'T IN THOSE DAYS.  A 4-F GUY FROM THE SW SIDE OF CHICAGO AROUND COMISKY
PARK MIGHT BE ABLE TO GO UP TO THE NORTH SIDE TO WRIGLEY FIELD AND CLAIM TO
HAVE BEEN ONE OF "CARLSONS RAIDERS", BUT EVEN THEN THERE WAS A GOOD CHANCE
THAT SOMEONE UP THERE WAS RELATED TO SOMEONE IN HIS NEIGHBORHOOD AND WOULD
KNOW BETTER, OR REMEMBER SEEING THE JAMOKE AT THE BALL GAMES IN 1944/45  -
SO, I THINK IT WAS HARDER BACK THEN TO TRY AND BE A "WANNABEE"
