I was told by a former B-24 pilot who I worked with and who had been shot 
down over Germany and taken prisoner that he could not be sent back to the 
same front.  He was later, during the war, released by Germany and as he told 
me, he was not to be sent back to the same fighting front ever.

He was then trained to be a fighter pilot and flew a P-51 against the Germans 
just as the war was drawing to a close. He also related that had he been 
captured again, he was sure he have been executed.   So much for America 
following the rules.
