Hawaii Honors End Of Korean WarFriday made it 48 years since the end of the Korean War.
They came to honor the sacrifices made by Hawaii's soldiers during the Korean War; 456 killed in action, 41 prisoners of war, 947 wounded in action from Hawaii. "We should not forget the contributions and sacrifices made by the Hawaii soldiers," South Korean counsel Ji Doo Lee said. "They left a beautiful and warm Hawaii not only to defend the Republic of Korea from communism but to fight communism from spreading in the Asia-Pacific region." Gov. Ben Cayetano proclaimed Friday Korean War Veterans Armistice Day in Hawaii and ordered all flags flown at half-staff. "Though we commemorate the end of the Korean War today, we understand and remember that the conclusion of war does not necessarily bring an end to the pain and anguish of many who endured it," retired Gen. David A. Bramlett. As wreaths were presented, all at the memorial were reminded of the theme of the ceremony: Freedom is Not Free. "
