Hmm, that's interesting.
 
When I was with the Indian Head (1952-53), we had more beer (from PX) than we could possibly consume.  I suppose grunts were more blessed than Navy guys in that respect.
 
I heard that many Vodka-starved Soviet soldiers died from drinking methyl alcohol in North Korea (45-47).  During WWII, Japanese engineers made cars that ran on wood alcohol and when the Red Army marched into North Korea, they found a lot of this chemical.

In addition to Benzedrine, Navy Corpsmen supplied troops with 190 alcohol. I
heard of guys drinking Antifreeze (and going blind). Sailors drinking torpedo
juice. Also drinking after shave lotion.
