As a Corpsman, (medic), I remember obtaining a bottle of Brown  Mixture, 
which is a licorice root based cough syrup, when with the 7th Marines.  Since 
everyone smoked, everyone coughed.  Before going on night patrol, I would, on 
occasion, give my people a dose to lessen their frequency of coughing;  
especially if they were going out to set up an ambush. Another bit of lesser 
history.
