Hi John-

They tell us the mind is the first to go, but I'm not so sure of that
lately.
The panty raids at UC Berkeley were in the mid fifties (fall of1956-57)
after the Korean War. They started at Berkeley and hit the front pages of
newspapers across the country. I was there.
I came back from Korea, went back to school at UC Berkeley, went to
graduate school there, got my degrees and taught there for several years. I
went to school with a lot of kids who fought in Korea and I kind of resent
your inference. As we have been discussing, Korea was not Vietnam.
Unfortunately, you have a rather blunt way of putting things, John
(Christ, now I can't keep you guys straight).
FYI, at the start of the war there were no college deferments and a lot of
us students joined before being drafted. You pretty much got to pick what you
wanted to do by doing that but I can tell you there was a lot of patriotism
involved.
I feel very good about my service in Korea and even though I was not a
"ground prounder" I am proud of those guys who were and have a lot of empathy
with them. That's why I'm on the list.
