Re: KOREAN WAR DOCUMENTARY PROJECT

I do not know if I can help. But I have studied BFM and ACM of many
aircraft.
The Saber was almost twice as heavy as the Mig. With the same general
thrust.
Because of the Migs cannon they could really damage another plane.
B29s and B26's took a beating.

Where our 50cal had to be on target a full 1/2 sec to do real good damage.
Usually the burst was 3 sec or longer. Using the spray method.
The Mig was built strong and easy to work on compared to the Saber.
Not until the 4-20mm F series did the USAF have equivalent hitting power.
And they did make up for the 6-8 months on assignment.

Seem the Navy took notice of the Zeros capabilites as all the late model and
post models had 20mm.

Why the Russian loved the 37mm came from our Lend Lease P39's and P63's.
Not a lot was written about the planes but they did terrible damage to
Hitlers vehicles and multiengine planes.
Interesting that the USA feared Russia would use the P63's in Korea.
Still they had a very robust Yak 9U that easily could out dogfight the
Mustang.
It had a 1000 ft/min better rate of climb and similar speed.
Plus it had better Roll Rate and Sustained Turn Rate.
However the Mustang probably was better at the high speeds, where
intercepting and stable gun platform was its speciality.

I know the USAF and SAAF lost a lot of Mustangs. Mostly to ground attack.
USN lost lots of Corsairs. They sparingly used the Bearcat and Tigercat
The AD1 was used more and more. It seemed despite the liquid cool merlins
of the Mustangs the Radial Engine Corsairs suffered equal fate in the ground
attack role.
Seems the Bristish Meteor was easily shot down.
The Russinas shot down many F80's and F84's.

Interesting the Russians and USA made the same mistakes in Korea that they
did in WW2 on each respective sides.
