I know of several cases in Viet Nam of ASA linguies participating in other than SIGINT actions -- one who was loaned out to LRRPs for language support and was not happy about it survived with only his canteen as a victim of VC marksmanship.

Even the first ASA casualty in Viet Nam, James Davis, was killed while with other than ASA ("Radio Reseach") units there.

I haven't seen any tales from Korea but have heard enough to realize it could have been likely they were used in other than SIGINT/COMINT functions.
