Have you seen any Soviet explanation why they did
not send up MIGs to challenge the US bombing over
Suiho Dam? It was certainly within their area of protection.
Was there any AA fire from the ground? Did the US
lose any planes on those two days' mission?
My guess is that the Soviet leaders made
a political decision over that crisis. They were probably
afraid of igniting a WW III. If they sent up one hundred fifty of
their MIGs to meet the hundreds of US air armada, that
could have resulted in the biggest air fight in history--
resulting in great loss and exposing the Russians'
participation in the war.
