I wonder if the authors use of "Forerunners" refers to members of the PLA's
Third and Fourth Field Armies which were employed in Korea during the war.
The declassified document that I posted the other day does state,

"The major portion of Chinese Communist paratroop trainees appear to have
been selected from the regular field forces, particularly from units of the
Third and Fourth Field Armies."

Any thoughts?
