Re: Naval Bombing

I know that the battleship Missouri was on the East coast for a bit, as it
supported my unit once or twice. That was around Sept. of 1951 or it may
have been August.

What size guns that ship had, I do not know, but once we were told that the
round was on its way, we could see the shadow of the shell as it passed in
front of us, hit the hill, then literally lift the top off and set it back
down.

I am sure, that some of the hills are not as high as they used to be once
that shell hit. Back in Chicago, I lived near a rail staging yard and the
sound of the cars being humped at night and striking the coupler of the next
car, sounded just like the shell from the Missouri exploding on the hill. I
will never forget that sound.
