Re: Soviet Aircraft Types in Korea

Dan,

To the best of my knowledge only the ROC got F-47s, as the USAF wanted them
out of the inventory ASAP. (A quick reading of losses in Korea show at least
24 F-51D aircraft lost due to coolant system damage which probably would not
have happened if they had been flying F-47s, but that's another point for
discussion.)

MiG-17 is arguably the best of the non-supersonic MiGs. Later F-86s (the H
being a gunfighter and the D a rocketeer) were quite different from the
earlier Es and Fs. ROC used Ds and Hs with early model Sidewinders, which
were one reason they did well against PLAAF. In Korea, different story and
different results. I have not followed up many of the tales of postwar combat
but I do know a number of USAF pilots scored kills with the F-86H against
them.
